Imada

A Gomeran hamlet in the Retafe ravine

Found in the centre of La Gomera, Imada is a tiny village, boxed in at the base of the Retafe ravine, in the shadow of the mountains and overlooked by rocks. It is close to the protected landscape of Orone and daily life is spent cultivating crops on the green terraces between a multitude of palm trees. Narrow lanes and pathways lead off its one main street, which bring you to traditional Gomeran houses, many of which are made from bare stones and others whitewashed, contrasting with the green of the surrounding countryside.

Cultural values and exquisite goat's meat

Take the steps down and you will come to Imada’s first houses and the church. The hamlet has a number of items of important cultural interest such as 'eras' (places for threshing to extract grain), ovens and local stone presses. At the back of the Refate ravine a small stream flows into mid-air between the impressive cliffs and you will find goat herds grazing freely along the hillside. We don’t recommend you leave Imada without trying the deliciously prepared goat's meat.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
