Caserío de Imada

A Gomeran hamlet in the Retafe ravine

In the south-central part of La Gomera, a little hamlet tucked away at the bottom of the Refate valley, shadowed by the mountains and overlooked by various cliffs. It is close to the Orone Protected Landscape where people spend their days among the terraced fields covered in palm trees. Different paths and alleys branch out from the one main street, leading to traditional Gomeran-style houses, many of them made of bare stone and others clad in a white colour that contrasts with the green landscape.

Cultural places and delicious goat meat

At the bottom of the stairs you will come across some houses and the church. Imada has some very interesting cultural artefacts, such as threshing floors (where straw was thrashed to extract the grain), domestic ovens and even presses carved into the rockface. At the bottom of the Refate valley, a stream runs through the massive cliffs and you can see flocks of goats eating on the hills of the hamlet. You shouldn’t leave Imada without trying its exquisite goat meat.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
