Distance from Point A to Point B: First stage / Cheese and Pastoralism Interpretation Centre to Drago de Agalán, 1.6 km
The route begins at the Cheese and Pastoralism Interpretation Centre, where a guide introduces visitors to La Gomera’s pastoral tradition. Here, the practice of transhumance is explained — an ancestral system in which herders moved their flocks between the coast and the highlands according to the season, shaping rural life on the island for centuries.
The centre also reveals how the ancient Gomeros observed the stars to navigate, forecast the weather and organise their harvests and pastoral activities. A perfect introduction to understanding the deep connection between nature, herding and culture in La Gomera.
Distance from Point B to Point A (Return) / Drago de Agalán – Cheese and Pastoralism Interpretation Centre: 1.6 km
The walk continues along the Tajonaje ravine until it reaches the impressive Drago de Agalán, the oldest and largest dragon tree in La Gomera, with more than 400 years of history. Surrounded by a landscape of agaves, this tree was considered sacred by the ancient Gomeros, who attributed magical properties to its red sap, known as “dragon’s blood”.
Under the starry sky, the visit blends nature, ancestral legends and astronomy, creating a unique experience that connects travellers with the spirituality and natural history of the island.
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
- It is safer to keep your pet on a lead.
- Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
