Wines of La Gomera: drink our island’s culture

How often do we get the chance to drink a wine with so much history and effort behind it?

One of the greatest iterations of heroic viticulture can be found on the island of La Gomera. This term alludes to conditions on the terrain that make working with vine stocks difficult. To grow the vines, wine-producers defy the steep slopes and their vertigo in order to eventually gather the prized bunches of grapes. Unique grapes that reach our tables with that spirit in the form of a beverage.

Wines with “Denominación de Origen La Gomera” (Spanish seal of quality), with exclusive characteristics and quality stemming from the set of characteristics present on the island (orography, soil type, microclimate, human factor), are smooth, aromatic and well-balanced in the mouth.

While there are young white and red wines, most of the wine production is from white grapes, and here we should highlight one unique grape that is exclusive to the island for its singularity: Forastera Gomera. This is the best-rated grape oenologically speaking, because of its acidity, which makes it fresh and well-balanced in the mouth. It has grown on our island for over four centuries.

In their flavour, the wines of La Gomera hide the secrets kept by years of history and tradition, and when you try them, you will be absorbing the culture of an entire people.

Most of the vineyards are found in the villages and hamlets in the "medianías" (areas between 600 and 1,500 meters in altitude). You will be able to see the steps or terraces in the numerous gullies that shape the landscape. The steeper the slope the smaller the terraces are, those plots of farmland, propped up by strong walls of stone which gave rise to a culture that is deeply rooted in the history of La Gomera: the dry-stone culture, although that’s a story for another day…
