San Marcos Beach

Enjoying the force of the sea

Located in the charming town of Agulo, the beach of San Marcos has the characteristic black sand of La Gomera. There are strong waves in the area which makes swimming difficult. Visitors come for the great landscape, but the spot isn’t usually very crowded. Please note that, although there are a few services, toilets are not provided.

Declared one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Agulo has multiple attractions, including the Garajonay National Park Visitor Centre and the Church of San Marcos Evangelista, a picturesque sanctuary in the neo-Gothic style. For the more adventurous, the Mirador de Abrante provides a spectacular view of Teide. At the spot there’s a once-in-a-lifetime glass walkway that hangs more than 600 metres above the ground.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants from the environment.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Do not use soap or gel in the showers located at the entrance to the beach.
- Try to use ocean- friendly sun creams.
- Pets are prohibited at most beaches. Make sure you can take them beforehand.
- Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.) or activities that might be bothersome, such as ball games.
