La Gomera Parador

A parador with views of the island of Tenerife

There are hotels you always go back to, like La Gomera Parador, in the east of the island. When you cross its threshold, you realise you are on one of the oldest of the Canary Islands. It is carefully decorated in marine shades, evoking a past when boats used to set off from here to America. Its setting, above the town of San Sebastián, has its reward on clear days: a fantastic view of Tenerife while you sunbathe by the swimming pool.

A 16th-century building near the capital

Every corner of this building, representing the island architecture from the 16th century, is worth a photograph. The traditional but airy Isabelline Gothic lounges lead to a garden dotted with seats, so you can feel the sun. There are pleasant courtyards where you will feel like trying local delicacies such as almogrote. This typical cream cheese is also served in the restaurants of San Sebastián de La Gomera, a historic town that is well worth having a walk round, as is its port, from which boats set off to other islands.
